The best French Alps ski resorts for groups

The right resort for a group is rarely the biggest or the most famous. It is the one that suits the level of your skiers, keeps everyone together and can be reached without a long day of travel. There are dozens of good options across the French Alps; here are four contrasting examples to show how the choice works.

What matters for a group

  • Snow reliability, which depends mostly on altitude
  • Terrain for every level, so beginners and strong skiers both enjoy the week
  • Easy access from the airport or the station, by private coach
  • Accommodation that can take the whole group under one roof
  • Things to do for non-skiers and in the evening

Tignes, for altitude and snow

Tignes, in Savoie, skis from 1,550 to 3,456 metres and is linked to Val d'Isère, forming one of the largest ski areas in the Alps. The Grande Motte glacier keeps the snow reliable from the start of the season into spring. It is the resort for groups of confident skiers, and for trips in late March or April. Access is by Geneva, Lyon or Chambéry, or by train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

Alpe d'Huez, for sunshine and mixed levels

Alpe d'Huez, in Isère, is known as the island in the sun. Its Grand Domaine runs from 1,250 to 3,330 metres, with the Sarenne, one of the longest black runs in the Alps, and a large area of easy slopes right above the resort. That balance makes it a strong choice for mixed groups and corporate retreats. Grenoble is the closest city, and Lyon airport is within easy coach distance.

Serre Chevalier, for forests and character

Serre Chevalier, in the Southern Alps, offers 250 km of runs between 1,200 and 2,800 metres, much of it through larch forests that protect the slopes from wind and keep good visibility in poor weather. Four villages sit at the foot of the slopes, from the historic town of Briançon, with its Vauban fortifications listed by UNESCO, to Le Monêtier-les-Bains and its thermal baths. Turin and Grenoble are the nearest airports, and Briançon has a night train from Paris.

Orcières Merlette, for a compact, easy base

Orcières Merlette, in the Hautes-Alpes, sits at 1,850 metres and skis up to 2,725 metres. Everything is within walking distance, the slopes are sunny and the atmosphere is relaxed. It suits families, groups of beginners and teams that want a simple, good-value base without the crowds.

Which resort for which group

  • Strong skiers, late season: Tignes
  • Mixed levels, corporate retreat: Alpe d'Huez
  • Scenery, character and value: Serre Chevalier
  • Beginners, families, first group trip: Orcières Merlette

These four are examples, not a fixed list. We work across the French Alps, including Les 3 Vallées (Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens), Paradiski (Les Arcs, La Plagne), Chamonix, the Aravis and the Maurienne valley, and we suggest the resorts that fit your group, your budget and your dates.
