Alpe d'Huez · Isère
250 km of sunny pistes, from the village up to the Pic Blanc at 3,330 metres.
Alpe d'Huez sits on a south-facing plateau and has one of the strongest reputations for sunshine in the French Alps. It shapes the whole experience: bright mornings on the slopes, lunch on sunny terraces and warm late afternoons, even in mid-winter.
The Grand Domaine links Alpe d'Huez with neighbouring villages for around 250 km of pistes, from 1,250 metres up to the Pic Blanc at 3,330 metres. Gentle snowfields for families, long cruising runs for good skiers, and the Sarenne – one of the longest black runs in Europe – for those after a challenge.
It is a lively resort with a real identity, generous and easy-going skiing, and enough altitude at the top to secure snow for most of the season. Non-skiers are well looked after too, with an Olympic ice rink, a swimming pool, snowmobiles, dog sledding and paragliding. For groups, see our guide to the best French Alps resorts for groups.
